Varsity Lakes College, Covered Outdoor Learning Area

The open design of this Basketball court makes this project a community asset

Varsity Lakes College is located in the heart of a vibrant suburb within the Gold Coast City Council area. The school shares the sports oval and the new basketball court with the community.

So the architects at Mode, Brisbane focused on the resilience of the new facility when designing project.

They specified a Spantech Pinkenba 370 curved roof supported by robust galvanised circular columns. Both products are long life and very low maintenance.

There is no fencing around the building, so the community has 24/7 access.

Mode incorporated tiered concrete seats at the southern end for students and spectators to mingle. They added wheel chair access ramps and a generous uncovered paved area for minor ball sports or pop up shelters. The basketball backboard can be retracted to make space for other sports or activities. Extra sports equipment is securely housed in a sports store adjacent to the courts.

Spantech was engaged as a nominated subcontractor to supply and install the structural steel, manufacture and install the roof, gutters and accessories.

The facility has become an important asset for the school and a focal point for formal and informal community events.
