Beenleigh Aquatic Centre

innovative tapered roof for a new learn to swim pavilion at beenleigh aquatic centre

The $5.5 million redevelopment of the Beenleigh Aquatic Centre is part of Logan City Council’s vision to create active and healthy communities.

The project includes a new 20m indoor heated program pool for year-round learn to swim, aqua aerobics and water walking with facilities for people with disabilities, spectator seating, kiosk, change facilities and office.

Design Features

Spantech worked with Liquid Blu Architects to design a roof that followed the unusual shape of the building.

Each Spantech Longreach profile tapers from 600mm to 675mm to produce a fan shape.

UNIQUE TAPER ROOFING DESIGN WITH A GENEROUS CANTILEVERED AWNING

The ends of the sheets were trimmed to form a straight architectural line at the front and back of the structure. The front of the building features a 5m cantilever.

Spantech also developed a project specific solution for the gutter support system. Each bracket can be independently adjusted to follow the changing angle of the tapered roofing profiles.

The design also uses the Longreach profile as a feature wall cladding. The wall cladding is both functional and designed to deter graffiti.

INDOOR LEARN TO SWIM POOL has a ceiling that appears to float

The Spantech Longreach roof supports an insulated suspended ceiling to create a clean, light filled inviting space.

High level translucent panels and deep shadow lines above the services areas make it appear the ceiling is floating above the walls.

Installation

The Longreach profile is supported by cleats welded to four lines of structural steel beams.

Profiles are connected to each other with a unique interlocking connection at the top of the profile. The profiles clip together with a simple hand tool. This strong, watertight connection eliminates fasteners and dramatically reduces installation time.

Ceiling clips are easily incorporated into the design in the same simple process. No fasteners. Strong and effective.

Each Longreach profile was tapered by 75mm to achieve the unusual shape of the roof. The profiles were manufactured longer than required. Once installed, the ends were trimmed to follow the line of the building to a maximum cantilever of 5 metres.
