Talley’s Potato Stores

Spantech designed and constructed A SERIES OF SPANTECH 11,000 TONNE POTATO STORES FOR TALLEY’S VEGETABLE DIVISION

Talley’s Vegetable Division at Ashburton process high quality French fries and oven fries for the domestic consumption and export to Australia and Asia.

EFFECTIVE LONG TERM STORAGE IS CRITICAL TO THE OPERATION

Since 2010 Talleys have regularly engaged Spantech to build a series of 11,000 tonne Potato Stores to steadily increase the plant’s capacity.

Spantech recently completed Stores 9 and 10. This takes the sites total storage capacity to one hundred and ten thousand tonnes to keep the processing facility operational for more than ten months.

KEEP POTATOES FRESHER FOR LONGER

Talley’s selected Spantech Potato Stores because they store potatoes fresher for longer.

Spantech Potato Stores reduce shrinkage to less than 2.5% annually.

This is the result of a unique combination of integrated design features.

The unique arch shape of the building is key. It is designed for optimum bulk potato stacking and minimal handling. The shape promotes excellent airflow through the stack. Efficient airflow eliminate dead spots that cause heat, excessive moisture and rot.

Temperature and humidity are controlled with a fully automated climate controlled system maintaining a constant 4 degrees Celsius year round. Air is delivered to the stack via an internal plenum and removable ducts. Removable ducts are easier to scale, manage and maintain than permanent floor ducts. The climate system also draws fresh air into the store when the climate outside the building is suitable - a simple feature that significantly reduces operating costs.

The stores are lined with fire retardant foam that insulates the building and cushions the potatoes stacked against the side walls. Similarly, Spantech Potato Stores feature an earth floor that protects potatoes on the lower levels, and is easily refreshed each season to prevent disease.

The building shape, climate control system, insulation and floor all work together to produce New Zealand’s most efficient and cost effective long term potato storage solution.
