Southern Ammunition Node Project

Major upgrade of NZ Defence Force’s southern explosive ordnance storage facilities

In 2021 Spantech undertook a major upgrade of the explosive ordnance (EO) storage and handling facilities as part of the Southern Ammunition Node Project for the New Zealand Defence Force.

The $11M project now stores ammunition to support NZDF training on the South Island for one year.

Two new Spantech 23m Earth Covered Buildings (ECBs) replaced several brick magazines and others constructed from timber and fibrolite in 1943.

Jason Stainger, Ammunition Depot Manager, who has managed Glentunnel since 2017, says the redevelopment is a game changer.

“The 70 year old magazines at Glentunnel no longer met the modern security and storage requirements for ammunition and explosives. This redevelopment brings Glentunnel into line with the Defence Ammunition Depot at Waiouru, which was modernised in 2016.”

“It will serve the NZDF for decades to come,” Stainger said.

Project Delivery Strategy

The complex project was divided into two phases to ensure training and critical base operations could continue with minimal interruption, and to allow Defence to manage their EO stocks.

Stage 1

Stage 1 involved the design and design and construction of one (1) Seven-Bay Unit Store at Burnham.

At the same time Spantech constructed two (2) Spantech 23m ECB, and installed two (2) EO Storage Containers at Glentunnel, one of New Zealand oldest EO Depots.

Stage 2

In Stage 2 Spantech constructed an Ammunition Preparation Building (APB) at Glentunnel.
